Prepare for the presentation and watch the brilliance present itself today.
37. Why would others want to help, guide, direct, or teach you if you put out a know-it-all vibe?
The funny thing about “knowing it all” is that it’s actually true: we know all that we know. But with that truth, I couldn’t defend a class-action lawsuit. (I could, but I’d lose.) I couldn’t fill a cavity (well I could, but repeat business just wouldn’t repeat), nor could I fix a fine watch in a timely manner. Candidly, I can barely assemble a fake Christmas tree with instructions and some aspirin.
The tragic thing about holding on to the idea that we know it all (or even know a lot) is that we miss receiving the knowledge of so many around us. So yes, a know-it-all disposition relationally ropes off the potential for others to engage and speak into our lives with the brilliance they are—and everyone has brilliance in their own way. As a result, we remain captive to our own knowledge, intake, and experience. This makes our brand value somewhat one-dimensional and, in many cases, limiting to what is possible in the realm of learning and value expansion.
Many years ago, a friend of mine told me about a group called Convene. It was a monthly gathering of groups of twelve to fifteen CEOs that would meet together for an offsite all-day meeting and support each other with their knowledge, feedback, connections, and encouragement. It sounded intriguing to me, but it was a substantial investment of both money and time. Still, I decided to give it a shot.
After about six months of participating in Convene, a few things were apparent. First, the people I thought would know everything . . . didn’t. The second thing that became clear was that we all were adding serious value to each other, and in many ways needed each other to see things through different lenses. Whatever capital investment I made in the group was fractional compared to the upside. One of the hidden values I never considered on the front end was that I was learning things I never would have received in life on my own, and I was now able to dispense those insights to others in a counseling, advisory, writing, and speaking capacity. I also joined a smaller five-man accountability group comprised of some A-players to work on my spiritual life, as well as a couples’ group with the same level of people to work on my marriage. I have remained in these groups for years, and although I may end up on sabbatical from time to time, I ultimately go back because the value is substantial and an island is a lonely place to be.
Back in the day, Jerry Levy, a vendor of ours, told my business partner and me, “If you guys put your heads together, you might come up with a good brain.” We laughed, and of course . . . agreed. Thanks, Jerry.
